Each season, I like to consider what has sparked joy for me lately. Doing so fills me with gratitude and excitement for the coming months.
For me, summer is a time to slow down, reconnect with nature, rest and have fun. Takumi and I spend many days outdoors playing with our children, gardening and enjoying the longer evenings. We also begin to plan our fall travels. This year, that includes a trip to London in October, where I look forward to joining the in-person KonMari Consultant Program Course.
Here are a few things that are sparking joy for me this summer. I hope they inspire you to consider a few of your favorites.
Scents of Japan
Whenever I’m far from Japan, I miss the simplest things: how different the rice tastes, the bustling markets, the smell of incense at historic shrines. I often pack items and scents that remind me of home to make settling into a new routine and time zone easier. I also try to adhere to my morning rituals, even when traveling. It helps me feel more grounded.
New Ways to Enjoy Green Tea
I love enjoying a cup of green tea or matcha with breakfast or after lunch, but lately, I’ve been exploring new ways to use green tea in my routines, including ways to enjoy it cold for summer.

Fresh Cut Flowers
I’ve spoken often about my passion for gardening, but recently I have been experimenting with setting periodic goals for trying new projects to learn new skills. I’ve recently been dreaming of planting a bouquet garden so that I can fill our home with fresh cut flowers every week. Someday! Until then, I’ll continue picking up a bouquet or two from our local farmers market. I’m looking forward to seeing all the fall flowers appear at the stands — especially the bright orange marigolds.

Summer Crafts
I have always loved heritage crafts, and now that my children are getting older, I’m excited to share some hobbies with them. Most recently, that has included felting – a new craft not only for them but also for me. Because we have several craft projects going at any time, I use the KonMari Method to keep our craft spaces tidy and organized.
Kurashi
I have been working on several exciting projects this year (more to share soon), and I find myself continually returning to my most recent book for inspiration: “Kurashi at Home.”
The idea of kurashi sparks endless joy for me. The word means “way of life” in Japanese and serves as my constant reminder to live more mindfully and meaningfully. I hope it inspires you as much as it inspires me!
